Top 10 Volumizers

For hair that's gone flat we have some great fixes from shampoos, to gels to mousses. Find out why these are the best in the market and watch as your flat hair gets big, bouncy & voluminous.

Some cheap tips for fast volume that we've learned over the years:

1. Great-But-Pricey Volume Shampoo: Phyto Phytovolume Maximizing Volume Shampoo

Elle Magazine dubbed Danilo - the guy who gives Gwen Stefani big hair - 'The Body Builder.' A celeb stylist for the past 15 years, Danilo is known for creating voluminous red carpet hair. According to Danilo (in Elle), up to 40% of hair's total volume can be achieved in the shower. For best results pair a volume shampoo with a volume conditioner. Danilo says they build on top of each other.

Another excellent volume shampoo is Bumble & Bumble Thickening Shampoo & conditioner.

2. Inexpensive Shampoo & Conditioner: Garnier Fructis Bady & Volume

A great alternative to fancy volume shampoos is Garnier Fructis. Try the shampoo & the conditioner. Another great inexpensive shampoo is Pantene Sheer Volume. Where to buy: Your local drugstore.

Quick tip for extra body:
If hair is flat & greasy, add instant lift with baby powder at the roots & crown. When you apply, avoid the hairline and the part, massage in & watch your greasiness disappear.

3. Secret Root Booster : Klorane Extra Gentle Dry Shampoo

Molly Sims said in the May, 2006, issue of Marie Claire, that she loves this dry shampoo for building body & disguising dark roots. Dry shampoos (a cheaper version is baby powder) are great for building body.

Another great dry volumizer: Stila hair refresher

4. Great Gel: Panten Pro-V Extra Fullness Gel

This inexpensive product works much like a mousse. Warm up in the palm of your hands, then run through your hair from roots on down. The volumizer is activated by the heat from your blowdryer.

5. A Great Volumizing Spray: Oscar Blandi No Gravity

Apply volumizing spray liberally to roots before blow-drying hair. Dry hair upside down using your fingers to open up sections while applying heat.

Another great spray: Fekkai Instant Volume Spray

We also love Aveda Volumizing Tonic, which works on the finest of strands.

6. Great Volumizing Spray: Bumble & Bumble Thickening Spray

This is our all-time favorite volumizer. 'It makes fine hair look like Texas hair,' Rodger Azadganian, owner of Seatte's Seven salon, says in the April 2005 issue of InStyle magazine. Spray on damp hair for instant fullness.

7. Pricey-but-Worth It Mousse: Kerastase Volumactive Mousse

Mousse works much like spray. You want to add to roots & work it through the rest of hair.

Another great mousse: Nioxin volumizing reflectives bodifying foam

8. Affordable Mousse: Matrix Logics Forming Foam

Celebrity hairstylist Steven Ward swears by this mousse for full-bodied Brigitte Bardot volume. With this mousse, your hair won't feel stiff or crunchy. Plus, at $10 we love the price.

Another great affordable mousse is Halo

9. Inexpensive Mousse: V05 Whipped! Volume Mousse

Can't afford a fancy mousse? No problem. This mousse ($3.69) will create volume once the heat from the blowdryer hits the product.

10. Best Volumizer Hairspray : Big Sexy Hair Flip it Over

Once you've applied styling mousse & blow-dried hair, section hair & mist with an aerosol hairspray like this great one. This spray creates height & stands up to humidity.
