Acne FAQ by Dr. Howard Murad: Can Drinking Water Stop Acne?

"I'm in college and I have stubborn acne. I heard drinking lots of water and avoiding greasy foods will help it clear up. Is this true?"

Greasy foods have never been proven to directly cause acne, however we do know that a diet high in iodine, which comes from seaweed or highly iodized cereals, for example, can aggravate acne. Studies have found that stress can affect eating habits, often leading us to choose foods that are not as healthy. And stress on its own can cause acne breakouts! I believe water is vital for the entire health of the body, however drinking 6, 8 or 12 glasses a day will not guarantee acne-free skin.

Yes, water is important, but it's not the amount of water you drink, it's the water you keep in the cells that is important in order to keep skin clear and healthy. I recommend a regimen that includes products to use on top of your skin and supplements that hydrate the skin from the inside out. These include ingredients such as essential fatty acid, and glucosamine, which maintain cell hydration internally and also hydrate the skin topically.
