Acne FAQ by Dr. Howard Murad: Acne Scars

"What can be done about acne scars?"

Acne scars can be categorized in two ways: as a hyperpigmented or darker area left behind as a blemish heals, or as a depression left in the skin when the pimple disappears. To treat the pigmented or darker spots, I recommend daily application of a product that includes hydroquinone (an FDA-approved ingredient) or high concentrations of vitamin C, mulberry and licorice to even the skin tone. It is also important to apply a daily sunscreen to prevent further discoloration. Weekly treatments using a high concentration of vitamin C plus other antioxidants are also extremely helpful.

If you have a depression or scoop-like scar, it means the deeper layers of your skin were damaged. Daily exfoliation with alpha hydroxy acids can help smooth the scar, but in many cases, a spa or professional skin care procedure or medical procedure is needed.

In a spa, "peels" such as AHA rapid exfoliation treatments or microdermabrasion are often available and can make a difference for shallow marks. For deeper scars, a physician can provide treatment with alternatives such as chemical or laser peels to resurface the skin. Or they can smooth out the scars with filling agents such as injections of collagen or Artecoll.
