How To Apply Makeup For The First Time (Over 50)

From About.com

You have never bothered with makeup, but suddenly a wedding or some other special occasion is looming and you want to update your look. Here are some tips to get you started.

Difficulty: N/A

Time Required: N/A

Here's How:

1. Before we start with the makeup, lets look at the skin before we start putting things on top. Chances are there are some dead skin cells there. A weekly masque will help remove them. (See tip 1)

2. And now the makeup...

3. For daytime, I would use a moisturizer, a foundation, a little powder, some mascara and a bit of lipstick. Everything should be sheer... nothing heavy.

4. Blush should be creamy. If you have powder blush, you could place a little on your eye lids. This brightens up your entire face. For lids, choose soft more natural shades. No reds or bright pinks.

5. Mascara... a little black or brown. If you have dark coloring, you might want to choose black. Brown will disappear on your lashes.

6. Lips should be soft and just slightly colored. Sometimes I use a combination of pink and apricot and it works every time. Looks entirely natural.

7. Powder: a compact with a mirror is always handy for touch ups if you have oily skin and for more lipstick as the day progresses.

8. **Use a very light hand... too much makeup will only make us look older and thats the last thing we want!

Tips:

  1. Not sure what kind of masque to use? Head to the drugstore and ask a beautician. She will help you pick one suited to your skin type.
  2. If you have time, get used to playing with the makeup. The first time you use it, it is going to feel odd and you are going to want to throw in the towel.
  3. Maybe start with one new product at a time. Remember the whole purpose of makeup is to make us look happy and healthy.
